The power of exercise on mental health

The power of exercise on mental health

Anyone that follows us and has seen my story knows that, like many out there, I have had some challenging times, and it was stepping into exercise that began my transformation and the desire to help others with their fitness journeys. So roll forward 7 years since my own journey started, now a studio and an awesome team of coaches, my baby AW Wellness Studios is growing!

It’s not all roses all of the time, and with the growth of the business has brought some good and bad days, and it is ok to acknowledge that, and you should too. Accepting life's challenges helps many to process them and cope. Find out how I recenter when it all feels too much

There is no one solution for mental health

Over the years, I have tried various solutions to see what might help. 🪴 Gardening, swimming, writing & staying inspired have really helped me see light during the tough times, other times they don't help & I just ride it out ! I have also tried and recommended things like Meditation, which I love. I’ve covered my favorite Yoga poses for mood management

One thing that I can always fall back on is exercise!

For me and others like me, when things get tough, exercise can be the thread that brings us around, but why?

Well, it is because exercise provides a sense of achievement, exercise releases endorphins, and this naturally perks us up. Endorphins are hormones that activate the body’s opiate receptors providing an analgesic effect - We feel better, and this can also shape our views of individual situations.

Our all women team is dedicated to helping you on your fitness and wellness journey taking a 360 holistic approach, always. Many of our clients have been with us from the very beginning, 1-2-1 personal training helps to expand their goals so that they are always inspired to be working towards something. Like most things, it helps to have someone with you along the way! Although this is an individual journey, having team of support around you is important. Sometimes we have clients come back a few years later and pick back up with us as things have changed in their lives. You know life and journeys are all different.

You need the support you need. Do not apologise for it.

How can I use exercise to improve my mental health?

Schedule sessions here with us at AW Wellness, but there are things you can do at home for yourself if you are feeling down & want to get moving.

Some exercise ideas

Go for a walk - Fresh air and exercise are a great combination, and they can lift your spirits.

Go for a run - If you are more active, then a run will be better suited. Ensure you properly warm up and cool down.

Get out in the garden - Doing some gardening will keep you moving, and the sense of achievement can be significant. Gardens can be a source of stress, so working through some gardening has health benefits all around.

Do some yoga - Don't have the kit? Companies like Mirafit.co.uk can help. Take your Yoga mat into your garden or front room and get a YouTube video up. I love yoga with Adrienne.

Keep it simple- press-ups, wall sits, squats and hollow holds- Set yourself some targets to do a set of any of these every hour! (Apart from when you’re sleeping, obviously 😉)

The unexpected benefits of exercise on mental health

Exercise makes you feel better - You will look at your situation with a positive perspective.

Exercise can help you sleep better - Big issues seem to shrink with sleep. Your mind starts to process things while you sleep so sleep can be tough with mental health struggles

Exercise gives you more energy - By exercising, you will find the positive energy release gives you a natural lift, which means you will feel more vibrant

Exercise gives focus and routine - When you are down, stepping out of the hole is difficult, but exercise will help give you focus. It allows you to complete a routine which provides structure.

Final thoughts…
