Often instead we describe our emotions as more ‘normal ‘ ones to escape identifying how we actually feel. E.g.: ‘I feel fat.’ Fat isn’t an emotion, but we say this because it’s easier than tapping into the internal conflict our weight is having on us. It allows us to make a statement without needing to go into that pain.
When we utilize, process and understand our emotions we gain a further understanding of ourselves. Your emotions are always trying to tell you something - you need to listen. Our emotions convey information regarding our external and internal experiences.
If you struggle to understand your emotions, then chances are you will also struggle to manage relationships, career and your mental health. If you aren’t able to understand your emotions, how can you use them and understand what’s going on? How can you make things better? Our emotions exist to HELP us.
Do you suppress your emotions? Ever feel numb? Suppression does not work. You can ignore how you feel, feel it and not address it or busy yourself but you won’t be able to ‘get rid’ of these emotions until you process them. Suppression leads to stress, anxiety, insomnia or it can come out in destructive behaviors such as dysfunctional relationships with food.
Have you heard of journaling? Journaling is a way of emotional processing. In order to write something, we HAVE to think about it. We often get so caught up when we feel an emotion, it then heightens that feeling and we shut down in panic not allowing us to reflect on why it’s actually happening. Writing by hand helps to shift your feelings into thoughts, which lowers the ‘intense feeling’ that the emotion presents itself with this allowing you to manage your reaction.
By doing this, you will help to lower your stress hormones and reconnect the emotional centre of the brain with the rational brain. This will allow you to feel more at ease and gain an understanding on the situation.
When we have an understanding of your emotions and how we work understanding our inside and our mind, changing the outside becomes much easier.
